INFN - CNAF Speaker: Tiziana Ferrari The development of new advanced network-aware applications and the evolution in networking are two related processes which greatly benefit from two-way exchanges and from progress in both fields.The article focuses on two representative cases: the applications for remote instrument control in the CDF experiment and the support of Quality of Service (QoS) in packet networks. Remote control addresses the problem of the effective participation to international high energy physics experiments for researchers located far from the laboratories. The support of reliable, efficient and guaranteed network transactions in remote instrument control through QoS mechanisms is the aim of this study. Several technologies for QoS implementation are compared: The article focuses on the differentiated services architecture (diffserv), one of the most appropriate thanks to its intrinsic scalability, flexibility and interoperability. In the article we characterise the application models adopted in CDF in terms of flow types and network requirements (packet loss probability, burst tolerance, bandwidth guarantees etc.). As a consequence, a proposal of the corresponding services and of the diffserv network design needed is presented. The proposed network services are then validated by test results on burst tolerance with policing, traffic isolation and buffer dimensioning for one-way delay optimization. The articles reviews the most interesting outcomes. Diffserv testing is carried out in a Europe-wide testbed and is an ongoing activity of tf-tant, a joint TERENA and DANTE task force.
