The BaBar collaboration started construction in 1995 of a CP
violation experiment. The offline software was based on C++ and an
OO design, forming a "first generation" example of the use of these
techniques. BaBar started taking data on schedule in May of 1999. We
describe our experiences and results to date, including during the
first eight months of running.
