The framework under which the PHENIX data collection system operates is presented herein. The PHENIX detector is composed of 9 major detector systems, some of which are made up of multiple components. The PHENIX data collection system is designed such that all the detector systems and subcomponents can operate independently of each other, all together as one detector system or in any combination in between. Because of the complex and diverse nature of this system, the Trigger, Timing and Event Building system have to be controlled by an overall master control architecture which integrates the independent operation of the detector systems to ensure the physics viability of the recorded data. Furthermore, since the data collection system operates in a distributed networking environment, the latest IT tools were brought to bare on the problem. OO design principles, tied together with CORBA, Java, Objectivity and Open Source solutions, were implemented to achieve the detector master control system. A status of the Integration work of the data collection system is further presented, highlighting the challenges overcome in bring the detector online into a data taking state.
