Speaker:

Over 200 people attended the first ever conference which dealt directly
with the use of Open Source software in the hard sciences, this past
October at Brookhaven National Laboratory. A report on what
transpired at the conference is given herein. Topics ranging from
a scientists ability to be sited for their software work, to the use
of Open Source software in large scale computing facilities like the
one being built for RHIC offline work, to medical imaging, data
analysis and visualization and large scale file systems were given by
scientists and software developers from both universities and
private industry. Because of the intense software scope of the research
done by those who present their work at CHEP 2000, and because of the
spin off applications which would be capitalized most effectively
within an Open Source framework, the CHEP community is presented with
this review to encourage it to focus its development work in the Open
Source arena.
