DESY Speaker: Jochen Bürger Presently an Engineering Data Management System (EDMS) is introduced at DESY. The EDMS is considered as one of the building blocks of an Integrated Information Management. The task of an EDMS is to organise all documents and processes during the design and development phase of a (technical) product. The software is commercially available as a kind of tool box from different suppliers. The implementation requires (i) a data model describing the engineering environment and (ii) the careful design and documentation of the processes which shall be supported by the EDMS. The latter implies an agreement on valid processes (eg. engineering change request or engineering change order). In a heterogenous environment of a HEP institute (eg. many collaborating institutes, different cultures) this agreement cannot be enforced top-down. Thus the introduction of systems like EDMS has to focus on human issues, the so called acceptance management. This implies especially involving people as early as possible in designing and maintaining the processes they are concerned with and in tailoring the system to their real needs. The talk will report on the results of the project achieved so far and on the lessons learned.
